On Maljardin, Mrs. Marshall comes downstairs to find Jean Paul. She comments that the portrait of Jacques looks remarkably like him. Raxl says they are indebted to each other, but does not elaborate. Mrs. Marshall tells Raxl to bring Holly down for breakfast. When Raxl departs, Mrs. Marshall rings a bell at the breakfast table, fantasizing about being in charge. When Raxl returns, Mrs. Marshall asks if Mrs. Desmond will be down soon. Raxl replies that there is no Mrs. Desmond, but does not explain further.

Mrs. Marshall and Holly talk and Mrs. Marshall explains that Holly needs her to manager her finances. Holly insists that she will do all she can to keep the money out of her mother’s hands.  Mrs. Marshall mentions that she knows Holly stole her diamond and emerald clasp, which was worth $3,500, threatening Holly with reporting the theft. Mrs. Marshall mentions that Holly needs her around to protect her from herself. Jean Paul, possessed by Jacques, interrupts and says that on Maljardin, all are under his protection.

At breakfast, Mrs. Marshall comments on the ring on Jean Paul’s hand. Jean Paul says it is an original from Jacques Eloi Des Mondes - the same ring, in fact, that he wears in his portrait. Mrs. Marshall tells Jean Paul she is sorry about Erica’s death, which is what she assumed based on Raxl’s earlier comments. Jean Paul (Jacques) is noncommittal, and doesn’t confirm or deny the truth of it. After Jean Paul leaves, Mrs. Marshall asks Holly is Erica Desmond is dead, causing Holly to ask her if she is after Jean Paul’s money.

Down in the crypt, Quito is playing with his pet cockatiel. Raxl joins him, wondering why Mrs. Marshall is on the island. Quito draws a dollar sign in the sand and Raxl agrees. She questions why so many people are now being allowed on Maljardin. Raxl tells Quito she needs him to go and get the Conjure Man but Quito is afraid to do so.

In the main room, Tim is sketching Erica using Holly as a model. Tim asks Holly why she came to Maljardin, and Holly explains that she and her mother had an argument about her inheritance and she ran away, attempting to escape her mother, but now that Jean Paul has allowed her mother on Maljardin, she is back where she started. Tim says he wouldn’t be surprised if Mrs. Marshall stays because she is after Jean Paul’s money.  Tim tells Holly Alison wants to leave but she can’t, and suggests that they might all be prisoners on the island.

Jean Paul (Jacques) enters and asks Tim to continue working on the portrait. Tim objects, saying he only has a memory of Erica to work from. Jean Paul tells him he can refresh his memory with pictures and descriptions. Meanwhile, Jean Paul and Mrs. Marshall talk, with Jean Paul telling her she brings out the devil in him.

Raxl directs Quito to go to the French Leave Café and get Vangie to tell him where the Conjure Man is. Meanwhile, Jean Paul (Jacques) and Mrs. Marshall share a brandy. Mrs. Marshall tells Jean Paul of her husband’s death and her grief over it. Jean Paul expresses his sympathy and then leaves. Once he is gone, Holly applauds her mother’s acting.

Down in the crypt, Jacques leaves Jean Paul and he is himself again. He questions what is happening to him, and prays that Erica knows when he is possessed. He questions whether or not he should have buried her and is concerned he is losing control of himself.
