In the crypt on Maljardin, Raxl asks Erica for her help against the evil in the house. She tells Quito that they must contact the Conjure Man. Quito is frightened, but Raxl reassures him that it is for the good of all. Quito opens the secret door to the temple and he and Raxl enter. Quito plays the drum while Raxl prays to the Conjure Man. Vangie, at home, hears Raxl’s call and hears Raxl say the devil is loose. Raxl asks for help from the Conjure Man, but Vangie replies that only God can get rid of the devil.

Later, reverend Dawson is sitting in the café when Vangie enters and hands him a tarot card, that of The Fool. She asks for the Reverend’s help, saying that their common objective is the preservation of the soul. Reverend Dawson asks why he is the Fool, and Vangie tells him it is because of the Fool tips the scales. Reverend Dawson asks where Holly went. Vangie tells him she has a hint, but does not elaborate.

In the temple, Raxl is certain that the Conjure Man has heard her prayers and will help them. She sends Quito to take Jean Paul to the mainland. Jacques possesses Jean Paul before they leave.

Mrs. Marshall shows up at the Café and speaks to Reverend Dawson. She asks him if he found Holly, but the Reverend replies that he doesn’t know. Mrs. Marshall accuses the Reverend of chasing Holly simply because he is physically attracted to her, but the Reverend tells Mrs. Marshall that her attentions do Holly more harm than good, causing Mrs. Marshall to leave. Vangie tells the Reverend that she’ll help him find Holly before her mother does.

In the drawing room, Holly is staring at the portrait of Jacques Eloi Des Mondes. Raxl enters and tells her that Tim has asked her to pose for Erica’s portrait. Holly comments that the portrait makes Jacques seem alive.

Jean Paul/Jacques arrives in the Café and heads to the bar. He reads the note Alison wrote to Dan Forrest, takes a lighter out and sets it on fire. Vangie notices him doing this and purposely bumps into him, causing him to spill his drink onto the letter and douse the fire. Vangie apologies to Jean Paul and they start conversing, and Vangie asks Jean Paul where Holly is. He informs her that she is a guest on Maljardin.

Mrs. Marshall returns to the Café and asks Vangie where Holly is. Jean Paul/Jacques interrupts and informs Mrs. Marshall that Holly is on Maljardin, knowing that Vangie did not want her to know this information. Jean Paul invites Mrs. Marshall to the island, but Mrs. Marshall doesn’t want to bring family troubles there. Jean Paul is insistent, however, and eventually Mrs. Marshall consents to come to Maljardin.

Vangie asks Mrs. Marshall if she has a message for Reverend Dawson. Mrs. Marshall says to tell him goodbye, and Jean Paul agrees, saying he is not welcome on Maljardin. Vangie asks Jean Paul about the documents that Dan Forrest needed him to sign and Jean Paul says that they have been taken care of, then leaves with Mrs. Marshall. After they depart, Vangie reads the note Jean Paul tried to burn and decides to call Dan Forrest.

Jean Paul and Mrs. Marshall arrive on Maljardin. Holly spots her mother and runs away.
