On the island, Jean Paul is possessed by the spirit of Jacques. Alison mentions to him that the portrait of Erica would be a great thing and Jean Paul/Jacques says he’ll think about it. Alison is confused – Jean Paul is not acting like the man she knows. She asks to see Erica and Jacques says she’s below in the crypt - temporarily. Alison insists on seeing her and Jacques directs her downstairs. Jacques leaves Jean Paul and he’s drained. From the crypt, Alison begs Jean Paul to come downstairs.
In the crypt, Quito moves the tanks around. Alison is frightened and wants to see Erica. She sees the cryonics capsule and is upset, suspecting that Jean Paul froze Erica alive but he reassures her that she was dead first. As Jean Paul comforts her, Alison mentions that she had a premonition of death.
Upstairs, Quito touches Jacques’s picture and is frightened. Raxl reminds him that Jean Paul is his master, no one else. Jean Paul tells Alison that he’s confused and says he doesn’t know what to believe, but something drives him on - an evil force. He says Raxl claims it’s the devil.
Jean Paul explains the circumstances of Erica’s death to Alison. He says Erica was sitting on the couch when the first attack came of eclamptic convulsion. Alison says she knows the condition. Jean Paul says Menkin could do little except ease her suffering. He tells Alison that the baby Erica was carrying died first and then one hour later Erica was hit by another spasm and died. However, Jean Paul insists she isn’t dead due to cryonics. He claims he will make it work and states that, on Maljardin, he is God. Alison tells Jean Paul that Erica’s heart, kidneys, and brain are all damaged, perhaps irreparably. She tries to comfort Jean Paul and says when she saw him earlier he seemed so carefree. Jean Paul interrupts and has Raxl take Alison to her room. Once gone, Jean Paul asks Jacques why he brought Alison here. Jacques says he couldn’t resist her.
As Jean Paul turns towards the window, Raxl comes and informs Jean Paul that Dr. Menkin wants to leave. Jean Paul tells Raxl he can leave tomorrow because it’s too dangerous tonight. Raxl tells Jean Paul that Menkin doesn’t approve of what is happening, so Jean Paul goes to talk to him.
Alison comes down and wants to talk to Raxl about Jean Paul. Raxl says the devil walks on Maljardin and points out Jacques’s portrait. Alison notes the resemblance to Jean Paul. Raxl says he’s more than an ancestor and tells her that Jacques killed his wife after she gave him a child, and explains that “they” took their revenge upon him. Alison questions her further, but gets no reassurances. Raxl says that he was trapped in his body through the effigy of a doll with a silver pin. There was a curse put upon him to deny him hope but Jean Paul set him free. She says Jean Paul blasphemed God by refusing to return Erica to God, and tells Alison that the change in Jean Paul is due to his possession but Alison is skeptical.
A scream is heard. Raxl and Alison look outside. Alison says it sounds like someone was hurt badly but Raxl says not to investigate. They reenter the house. Jean Paul and Quito come in with Menkin’s body. Jean Paul, possessed by Jacques, says he tried to fight his way into the boat. He tried to stop him but Menkin fell before he could get to him. Jean Paul/Jacques is flippant and says Menkin can be put in Erica’s old coffin and no one need know. He dismisses Raxl.
Jacques returns to his portrait and Jean Paul sleeps on the couch. While asleep, he dreams of Raxl telling him to fight the devil’s possession of his mind. She tells him that until the pin is found, all are in danger. She begs him to turn from Jacques as he is the devil, warning Jean Paul to avoid him or face the consequences. Jean Paul awakens and questions if he has to restore Jacques’s life to have Erica back. He wonders if he is damned and bound for hell with Jacques.
