In the crypt, Jean Paul speaks with Erica.  He tells her that his peace will come once she is alive again. Despite the fact that everyone doubts the cryonics process, he is hopeful that it will be successful.

Upstairs, Alison and Elizabeth chat.  Alison says she is distraught.  Elizabeth wants to wait for Jean Paul to return but Alison says it might be awhile.  Later, Dan arrives and Elizabeth departs.  Dan tells Alison he didn’t find a boat to take them back to the mainland.  He fears Jean Paul will change his mind about letting them go, and he wants to leave before that happens. 

In the crypt, Jean Paul vows that he will sacrifice everything, including the lives of all the others, to ensure Erica’s return.

Meanwhile Alison asks Dan why he is so against Jean Paul.  Dan says he is no longer Jean Paul’s employee, and explains to Alison the odd circumstances of their fallout.  Alison asks how Dan wound up on Maljardin, and Dan tells her that he received a letter from Vangie asking for his help. Alison believes that Jean Paul is simply misunderstood, and after having talked to him she now feels she understands him better. Dan on the other hand says that by keeping them all there, Jean Paul will force a revolt and he will be the leader of it. Unbeknownst to either of them, Jean Paul has heard all of this.  Alison tells Dan she’ll stay as Jean Paul needs her help.  Dan insists Jean Paul is dangerous but Alison disagrees.

Jean Paul enters and interrupts, saying he should be allowed to speak in his own defense.  Jean Paul speaks of Erica, saying she gave up her career for him and he will give up all for her, no matter what.  Jacques congratulates Jean Paul on his speech.  He tells Jean Paul that his friends might betray him unless he beats them to the punch.  Jean Paul says Dan can go but must promise to keep this a secret.  Dan says he can’t promise and tells Jean Paul he is very concerned about him.

Jean Paul speaks with Alison and says it’s hard to keep control of himself.  He asks Alison not to try to change his mine and he will not try to change hers. He tells her that nothing matters but to bring Erica back.  Alison tells jean Paul that the guests are all afraid of him, but she realizes now how deeply he can love. Jean Paul acts as though he wants to say something profound to Alison but she leaves before anything happens. 
Jacques speaks from the portrait and asks if Jean Paul is interested in Alison. Upstairs in her room, Alison asks herself the same thing.  Meanwhile, Jacques continues to taunt Jean Paul.

Later, as Alison is trying to sleep, she awakens to see Jacques beckoning her in the mirror.  The scene flashes back to the original Jacques.

In the flashback, Jacques is having a formal dinner. Jacques tells his guests his wife is indisposed then dismisses them to be alone with Raua, her sister.  Raua resists yet Jacques insists he is unhappily married so it does not matter.  Raua continues to resist out of loyalty to her sister Huaco and Jacques says there is no right or wrong between man and woman, only need.  He kisses Raua and she gives in, saying she is his.In the present, Alison awakens embracing herself. 

Jacques talks to Jean Paul in the living room. It is implied that Jacques drew Alison and Jean Paul into the same dream at the same time until Jean Paul gathered enough strength to free himself. Upstairs, Alison questions her feelings and wonders how she can want her sister’s husband.  Simultaneously, Jacques taunts Jean Paul about his desire for Alison.  Jean Paul is unsure of his feelings and runs upstairs.
