In the secret room, Jean Paul makes a recording to Erica.  He says he knows what is right and wrong, and being with her is right. He questions whether it is wrong to want her to live. Regardless, he tells Erica that the devil will not have his soul even if it means freeing her from the capsule before her time.

On the monitor, Jean Paul watches as Reverend Dawson prays over the capsule.  After praying, the Reverend examines the coffins in the crypt and then Quito arrives.  The Reverend says he wants to leave and asks Quito to use the boat to take him from the island.  Raxl interrupts and says Quito can’t help him leave – Quito will not leave for Erica’s sake.  The Reverend asks Raxl why she says there is danger to all and offers his assistance. Raxl replies that evil walks on Maljardin.

In the lab, Alison is as work when Dan Forrest enters. Angrily, she tells him not to bother her.  Taken aback, Dan asks Alison if she is changing too. He then asks how he can help. 

Back in the crypt, Raxl tells the Reverend that for the evil on Maljardin to be defeated, the soul of Jacques must be returned to his body, or at least re-imprisoned in the  conjure doll. She says that, as a servant of the Christian God, the Reverend might be able to help.  The Reverend says he’ll try but he needs to know what he’s helping with.  Raxl tells him they mustn’t speak in the crypt and takes him elsewhere. Meanwhile, Jean Paul watches all of this on the monitor. 

Raxl has Quito open the temple door, explaining to the Reverend that the temple is secret and sacred.  Raxl tells him of the people of Maljardin.  They were farmers, not warriors and this was their temple.  Jean Paul descends to the crypt looking for Raxl but does not find her. He wishes Erica could tell him the secret of the temple

In the temple, the Reverend sees the sacrificial altar and says God would not be pleased.  Raxl tells him that in her religion, the gods gathered the bones of the dead from other worlds and sprinkled them with blood, creating man.  The Reverend asks Raxl about the evil she mentions on Maljardin. Raxl takes offense, feeling that the Reverend mocks their religion and says it was wrong to bring him to the temple.  The Reverend assures her that  he is not mocking any religion, and that he’s very concerned with the present.  He asks Raxl to explain, and she tells him of Jean Paul’s plan for Erica.
Raxl says she fears the devil possesses Jean Paul and will destroy him unless someone on God’s side will help.  She says if Jean Paul is destroyed, all will be doomed with him.

Meanwhile, Jean Paul is in the main room.  He turns to the portrait and asks Jacques when he will bring Erica back.  Jacques simply laughs, telling Jean Paul that he should go to a bus terminal if he needs a timetable.  Jean Paul tells Jacques that he is his own man but Jacques tells him says he’s HIS man until he lets him go.  He then tells Jean Paul that they are on the same side - against the others.

In the lab, Alison is looking for Erica’s medical history, but cannot find it. She tells Dan that Menkin took lots of notes so Erica’s information should be there.  Dan wonders if Jean Paul took them, but Alison says she asked jean Paul and he said no.  Dan asks Alison if she believes in the cryonics process.  She says she is indifferent to it, but she is concerned about Jean Paul’s seeming split personality Dan tells her that their fates are in Jean Paul’s hands, as it’s up to Jean Paul to send them from the island.  Alison tells him that he will be going alone, as she will stay since Jean Paul needs her help.  She is a friend, a doctor and Erica’s death require her to study so that she will know what Menkin found out.  She wonders why eclampsia, which is rarely fatal, was fatal in Erica’s case.  Alison says Menkin’s notes on his experiments may have been for Erica. 

Dan tells Alison that if she stays, he stays.  Dan wonders if Menkin would have told Jean Paul what he was doing.  Alison says yes and Dan says he has a question for Jean Paul.  Jean Paul, having observed their entire conversation on the monitor in the secret room, enters and asks Dan what his question was.

Dan asks when Erica’s death was reported and says he doesn’t believe it ever was.  Jean Paul tells him that the cryonics people saw the death certificate.  Dan asks if the authorities were notified.  Jean Paul says he can’t speak for Menkin but perhaps. However, he insists he still wants privacy on the issue.  If the authorities need an autopsy, the capsule would have to be opened.  Dan asks Jean Paul if Menkin’s experiments had to do with Erica and Jean Paul says they never discussed that.  He needed Menkin to stay on the island, so he gave him the lab, but he never knew what he did there.

Jean Paul then asks Dan if he will come to work for him again, but Dan tells him that he already rehired him. Jean Paul apologizes, telling Dan that he has been forgetful lately.  Dan agrees to the job again, and he and Alison leave the room.  When they go, Jean Paul gets a bottle of pills from the cabinet. 

Upstairs, Jacques taunts Jean Paul, telling him that the solution to his troubles might be in his hand (referring to the bottle of pills). Jean Paul says it’s the solution to him, as he no longer cares for himself.  Jacques reminds Jean Paul that Erica cares for him so he’d better think about that before killing himself.
