Voiceover: Rev. Dawson“Morning on Maljardin. Where a new sunlight seems to have chased away much of the evil and pestilence of the past but shadows still remain. And in the shadows the master of Maljardin and his guests find fear and doubt fear that the curses of the past can never be erased from the island and Jean Paul awakens to doubt that his dead wife has returned to him at all.”
In his room, Jean Paul awakens to find his bed empty. He wonders if Erica was only a dream and if he is going mad. However, he is determined that Jacques will fulfill his bargain and bring Erica to him. As he looks down on the dressing table, he discovers a flower and a note. The note is from Erica, explaining that she has gone for a walk to gather flowers for him. The note goes on to say that his nightmare is over. Having realized where Erica went to, Jean Paul is visibly relieved.
In the dining room, Alison comments on the beautiful flowers that are present on the table. Raxl keeps her from touching them. Alison wonders where they came from as nothing can grow on Maljardin. Raxl tells her that there are such things as flowers of evil. However, Alison does not believe her. She comments that she has never seen the island so bright. Raxl asks Alison if Erica seems the same to her. Alison asks what she means by that. Raxl wonders how Alison could believe that Erica really is alive, as all of her efforts to use science failed. Alison is sure that Erica is real, but is at a loss to explain how she returned. Raxl advises her to study Menkin’s notes again in memory of the sister she knew long ago.
Jean Paul joins Dan and the Reverend downstairs. He tells them to ignore the bad and enjoy the good, but the Reverend says he advises people to do battle against evil. Jean Paul tells them that Erica wants them all to stay. Dan asks why and Jean Paul replies that Erica simply needs people to love. Dan wonders how long they will have to stay and Jean Paul tells him as long as Erica wants.
In the dining room Jean Paul tells Alison not to be distressed about the situation, but rather to simply accept it. Dan and the Reverend enter and Jean Paul insists that they eat. Erica enters with flowers, and gives them to Quito to give to Raxl. He is hesitant, so she throws them at him. Quito throws them down to the floor and steps on them.
In the lab, Alison is examining a slide. She remembers Raxl telling her to study the doctor’s sixth week of notes. As she experiments, she is reminded to check the notes. As she goes to check the notes Erica enters. Erica says Jean Paul is kind to give an entire lab to Alison, but Alison tells her that it is really for her. Erica is surprised, telling Alison she wouldn’t know what to do with a lab, as Alison was always the “smart one” and she was the “pretty one.” Erica says she was always pretending to be what was required of her, but not so with Alison. She worries if Jean Paul finds out she wasn’t what he thinks she was he will not love her anymore. Alison tells Erica that she was working for her in the lab, and Erica asks is she succeeded. As Erica talks she notices the flame from a Bunsen burner and has a strong reaction, begging Alison to put it out. Alison is bewildered but puts the flame out.
Alison asks Erica what happened while she was away and how she came back, but Erica says she can’t bear to remember as it hurts too much. Alison persists, and Erica finally tells her she cannot answer as she has no memory of it. Alison tells her that she must have gone somewhere as otherwise she wouldn’t have been able to come back. Erica tells her that since she is there, she obviously was able to come back. Erica remembers that she always had to play the mean witch as a child and Alison was good, but Alison says it was the other way around. Erica replies that her memory is fading, then walks out. After she leaves, Alison remembers Raxl's advice to study Menkin’s notes.
In the main hall, Holly and Mrs. Marshall enter. Holly says she enjoyed the evening, but Mrs. Marshall thinks it was bizarre. Mrs. Marshall asks Holly to excuse her as she’d like to talk with jean Paul alone. After Holly leaves, Elizabeth tells Jean Paul that she is concerned that Erica is an upsetting influence on Holly, commenting that she is, above all, mother and naturally is concerned for Holly. Jean Paul tells her that he thought Erica and Holly seemed to have a good rapport. Elizabeth asks what Erica’s interest in Holly is, but Jean Paul assures her there is nothing sinister going on.
Meanwhile, in the dining room, Erica speaks with Holly. She tells her they will go pick flowers together. Mrs. Marshall overhears this and protests, reminding Erica that nothing can grow on Maljardin and suggesting it would be better if Holly stayed with her. Erica appeals to Jean Paul to allow Holly to go with her and he agrees. Raxl enters and points out that the flowers Erica picked earlier for the table are wilted and dead. She suggests no more flowers be picked on Maljardin.
In the lab, Alison tells Dan of the warnings in Menkin’s notes that talk of biochemical changes altering the personality of a dead person. She tells Dan that Menkin had concluded that if someone were to come back to life that person could become a force for evil. Dan wonders how Erica has changed. Alison relates to him how Erica talked of their past. Alison tells Dan that she can’t leave, but Dan insists that, despite that, he will. Alison confesses that she has the feeling one will leave Maljardin alive.
