In the boathouse, Dan prepares to leave while everyone else dresses for dinner. Alison comes to say goodbye. She is convinced that no one can help them and believes the devil is loose on Maljardin. Dan vows to find someone to help them. Tim comes and tells Dan he must leave to be in synch with the tides. Tim hears someone coming - it is Quito. They all hide as he approaches.
Quito locks the mooring chains on the boat. Dan and Tim cannot stop him. Quito looks around as if he had heard something but eventually leaves. The three emerge from hiding. Dan declares that he can’t wait for the slack tide again - he has to go now. Tim tries to pry the locks on the boat loose. Dan sends Alison back to the house to cover for him while he escapes. He tells Alison that he loves her. Tim gets one lock free and Dan tells him to go take care of Alison and Holly as she is beginning to take notice of him. The second lock comes free and Dan prepares to leave.
In the dining room, Raxl lights candles for dinner. Jean Paul invites Erica to see how Raxl has set the table. Erica sees the candles and says they will not have them. Jean Paul says they will set off her beauty, but Erica demands that Raxl put them out. Raxl refuses. Erica insists that the candles be taken away so Jean Paul orders Raxl to do it and she concedes. Erica tells Raxl to remove the candelabra and have Quito put out the fire in the fireplace. Raxl says Quito is inspecting the island. Erica leaves, saying she will not stay until the fire is put out. Jean Paul tells her he will douse the fire himself.
Raxl tells Jean Paul that the problem with Erica is right in front of him. She begs him to watch closely. He says he has been watching and has not noticed anything. Raxl insists that Erica is somehow different. She is afraid for Jean Paul as she senses wickedness and death – his death.
In Holly’s room, Mrs. Marshall tells Holly it hurts her when Holly ignores her and favors Erica. Holly tells her that it’s only her pride that is being hurt. Mrs. Marshall admits that but she insists that she still loves Holly. Holly is skeptical, saying that she believes the only thing her mother loves is the money. Holly shows her mother the pearls she got from Erica. Mrs. Marshall tells Holly she should return them and wonders why Erica gave them to her. Holly says that Erica might have been bored with them or she might have given them to her because she likes her as a daughter. She accuses her mother of being jealous. Mrs. Marshall denies it – she is actually afraid of Erica. Holly cannot believe this, and tells her mother that Erica is the nicest person she has met.
Later, Erica speaks with the Reverend, hoping that he is at peace now, despite his inner struggles. She tells him that they should discuss the matter further. The Reverend tells Erica he has questions for her as well, but Erica ignores him. Holly enters, wearing the necklace Erica gave her. Erica shows holly off to the Reverend, explaining that she now has an aversion to pearls since her favorite one is now lost. Mrs. Marshall comes down the stairs and tells Erica she shouldn’t have given Holly the pearls, but Erica ignores her, changing the subject. Mrs. Marshall asks Erica if she can talk to her, but she is ignored.
Alison comes in with her dress wet. She says she was walking with Dan and a wave came up, getting him wet, then explains that Dan is upstairs changing. Erica tells Raxl to go to Dan's room and tell him to come down, but Raxl says he is not in his room. Suddenly concerned, Erica tells Jean Paul that Dan is trying to leave and he must not escape if he wants her to remain with him.
Jean Paul goes to the boathouse, but Dan is already gone. He calls for Quito and they both call out and try to locate Dan but they cannot see him. Jean Paul worries that Dan will drown.
Upstairs, Holly knocks on Erica’s bedroom door, but Mrs. Marshall tells her to stay away, warning Holly that Erica is wicked and wants them all in her power. From behind her bedroom door Erica tells holly that she is fine and just needs to rest. Once holly leaves the door, Erica eyes a golden bowl on the table.
At the boat dock, the moon comes out and Jean Paul can see Dan, but he notices that the tides are turning against him, drawing his boat into the whirlpool. Jean Paul commands Quito to try and reach Dan but he will not obey. Raxl enters and commands Quito to go. He obeys, jumping into the water. Raxl is sure that Dan will not make it - the water offers nothing but death.
In her room, Erica has fashioned a paper boat. She places it in the golden bowl, which is filled with water, and spins it with her finger, making a miniature whirlpool. Then she sinks the boat.
In the main hall, Alison and Tim wait, worried about what has happened. They start to head to the boathouse when the main doors open. It is Quito, carrying Dan’s lifeless body in his arms. Erica watches from the stairs and then comes to comfort Alison. She warns them all that no one else must try to leave. At that moment, Raxl comes down the stairs, holding the golden bowl. She mockingly tells Erica that it is for her, from her chambers. She then lifts the paper boat out of the bowl and pours the water from it.
