Maljardin Arc
EPISODE 57

Voiceover: Rev. Dawson “Maljardin a island governed by evil here a woman and a portrait face each other, the lovely Erica consort to the demon within the portrait implores his help for only he the haunted spirit of Jacques Eloi Desmondes can prevent her from being thrust back into the world of eternal silence.”

In the main hall, Erica speaks to the painting of Jacques, imploring him to tell her what to do. Jacques tells her that the man of God must die. Erica asks how but the portrait does not answer. Jean Paul enters and finds Erica, wondering what she is doing.  Jean Paul tells her that he wants the portrait of Jacques removed, but Erica wants it to remain, telling Jean Paul that nothing on Maljardin should change. Jean Paul comments that Jacques was wicked, But Erica says she is intrigued by the portrait. Jean Paul is not moved, and tells Erica that Quito will remove the painting in the morning. Erica tries a new tactic, telling Jean Paul that she really likes the painting because it looks so much like him, and she loves him so.

The next morning, Erica comes down to the main hall and talks with Holly. Holly tells her that she had a recurring dream of someone calling to her, but she does not know who it was. She mentions that she felt a kind, gentle force, but not a voice. Jean Paul enters and tells Holly that Erica will not sit for the portrait; Holly wonders why and tells Jean Paul that Tim would do a good job. Erica, however, says her decision is final.

Mrs. Marshall enters and asks Erica why she is refusing to sit for the portrait. She wonders if Erica is afraid. Erica tells her that she is not afraid. Mrs. Marshall is insistent that Erica is afraid to see herself on canvas. Erica suddenly changes her mind, saying Tim can start painting her portrait that afternoon. She looks directly at Mrs. Marshall and tells her that she does not take challenges lightly. Mrs. Marshall replies that when she is challenged she usually wins.

In Quito’s room, the Reverend is still studying. Raxl tells him he is foolish for studying the secrets of evil. The Reverend says he wants to know how to do good by studying how to get rid of evil. He asks Raxl if Erica is evil, but Raxl will not speak against her. The Reverend persists, telling Raxl that since Erica’s reappearance two people have died. Raxl asks the Reverend if he can prevent the evil spreading and he says he can try exorcism to confront the evil. He vows to try it on Erica.

In Erica’s room, Tim is trying to sketch Erica, but he is frustrated as he cannot capture the image. Erica asks if Tim has seen the Reverend, mentioning that she likes to talk with him as he’s interesting, Tim tells Erica that the Reverend has been anxious and distressed ever since he came to Maljardin. Erica tells Tim that she is tried and wants to rest. She then asks Tim how his portrait is coming along and Tim replies that he is unsure. Jean Paul enters and asks to see the portrait. Tim shows him and he gets upset, insisting that it doesn’t look like Erica at all. Erica asks to see but Jean Paul refuses, asking Tim if it is some kind of joke. He calls off the portrait for the day. Erica takes the portrait from Jean Paul and looks at it, then at Tim. The close up shows a stern woman, unsmiling and somewhat ugly. Erica asks Tim if that is how he sees her. Tim replies that he felt as though he could not control his hands and that he was forced to draw that sketch. Erica tears the sketch up in front of him. Tim apologizes to Erica for insulting her and asks if they can be free to go and Erica feigns being offended. Jean Paul says they should discuss it privately. Erica tells Jean Paul that she feels as though she has been forgotten and needs people around her for a time. Tim asks for how long and Jean Paul tells him until Erica is fully recovered. Jean Paul requests that Tim go relax until he can try the portrait again. Erica begins to object, but Jean Paul insists it will be done.

Tim asks if he will be free to leave once he finishes and Jean Paul says yes. Erica agrees if he finishes to her satisfaction. Erica tells Tim to keep quiet about the failed portrait, as it might ruin his reputation. He agrees.

Downstairs, the Reverend and Alison discuss the exorcism. Alison is against it, but the Reverend insists that good must conquer the wicked. Alison cannot believe that Erica is wicked. She admits that she is acting strangely, but insists she is not possessed. The Reverend wonders how Erica could come back to life, but Alison has no answer. The Reverend says that since science has no answer, the cause must be spiritual and he insists that it cannot be benign. He tells Alison that if she loves Erica she will help him.

Tim enters. And tells the Reverend that Erica wishes to speak with him – alone. The Reverend heads upstairs to speak with her. In her room, Erica is sitting with a voodoo doll dressed as the Reverend. The Reverend enters and Erica asks him to take a walk along the cliffs with her, but he refuses. Erica tells the Reverend that she wishes he would accept her as she is. She asks if the Reverend wants to convert her. The Reverend asks from what, but Erica does not answer. She tells him she has no soul for saving. The Reverend says that all have souls, good or bad. He asks to be alone at prayer. Erica tells him that she found a spot where she could pray unobserved, a door that one can lock so no one can enter. She asks the Reverend if he’d like her to take him there. He tells her that he can go alone, but Erica insists, telling the Reverend that she will take him there later that night.

That evening at dinner the Reverend is upset, so Erica asks him if they should take their walk. He agrees. Alison asks him if he will do anything about Erica now but he replies that he will only talk to her. Later, on the roof, the Reverend prays. Erica joins him. The Reverend asks Erica if they could pray together. He tells Erica that he saw her lips moving in prayer at Dan’s grave and wonders if they were curses on her lips. Erica tells the Reverend that he is a clever man, but he does not agree, telling Erica that his faith has wavered since the day he came to Maljardin and clever men do not waver. Erica suggests that at times God deserts a man but the Reverend disagrees, saying that he knows now that God will never desert someone. He tells Erica that  he has found his soul on Maljardin. He commands the demon to leave Erica. She is panicked and commands him to stop. He continues, but nothing happens. Feeling stronger now, Erica tells the Reverend that she is happy he found his god, and that his soul is at peace, but she will thank him to leave hers alone. She moves in to kiss him.

In the dining room a scream is heard, then another. On the roof, Erica stops screaming and looks down, bidding the Reverend goodbye.
