Voiceover: Raxl – “Maljardin another night of terror again the screaming protests of a dying man and the island again knows evil as matt, the man of god who has found his faith once more, plunges to his death from the towers of Maljardin.”
In the dining room, a scream is heard, then a thud. Mrs. Marshall screams “she killed him!” and Raxl finds blood on the carpet. She declares the island is being washed in blood – that is the future for all of them and she is powerless to help them. Mrs. Marshall is distraught and Holly takes her to her room. Erica comes down the stairs, telling everyone that the Reverend killed himself. Mrs. Marshall cannot look at her and declares she never wants to see her again.
Erica speaks to Raxl, aware that she knows what really happened. Raxl tells her that she has known about her for a long time. Erica tells her it does not matter as her powers are stronger than Raxl’s. Raxl tells Erica she knows she is in league with Jacques and that she has deceived Jean Paul. Erica tells Raxl that Jean Paul made his bargain of his own free will. Raxl tells her that Jean Paul did that in exchange for his wife, but she is not his wife. She is an evil spirit sent to destroy. She asks Erica what she wants. Erica says immortality. Raxl tells her that she does not live through evil, but rather through devotion to her gods. Erica laughs, asking Raxl where her Gods are now. Raxl replies that they have been silenced through Jean Paul’s order, but that we will listen to her one day and realize what Erica’s real plans are – the possession of Holly. Raxl is aware that Erica wants to liver forever by possessing her. Erica tells Raxl that she is clever. Raxl informs her that she has battled Jacques before and has won, but Erica tells her that she has never done so without her god. Raxl vows that she will not be without her god for long.
Quito enters the main hall, carrying the Reverend’s body. Erica tells Jean Paul that he jumped from the roof even though she tried to stop him. Jean Paul is stunned, and does not acknowledge what Erica has said. He refuses to hold Erica and tells Quito to take the body to the crypt. He wonders why the Reverend would kill himself since he was a man of God and believed in life. Erica tells him that the Reverend was tortured by doubts and that she was trying to help him overcome them. She thought that if the Reverend stood under the stars that the wonder of his god might be returned to him. She begins to cry, saying that she killed the Reverend. Jean Paul is now convinced that Erica is innocent and that she was only trying to help. Erica tells Jean Paul that the Reverend told her that he was being tortured by demons.
Alison enters the room, having overheard what Erica said. She disagrees, saying that the Reverend’s faith was never stronger, and that if he was tortured by demons then they were not his. Both Alison and Tim say they do not think the Reverend killed himself. Erica asks Jean Paul if he believes her but he does not answer.
Upstairs, Holly talks with her mother. Mrs. Marshall insists Erica is a murderess. She tells Holly that Jean Paul is blinded by love and can’t face the truth. Holly asks her not to talk of Erica that way. Mrs. Marshall insists they need to leave as she is now afraid of what will happen to Holly. Holly absently replies that nothing will happen to her. She has a dreamy look on her face. Mrs. Marshall fears that something has already happened to Holly. Jean Paul enters, asking Mrs. Marshall how she is feeling. Holly asks him about Erica. Jean Paul tells her Erica is very upset, but he wanted to make certain that she and her mother were comfortable. Holly tells Jean Paul that she is sure that Erica did all she could to save the Reverend. Mrs. Marshall asks Holly to get her some sleeping pills. After Holly leaves, Mrs. Marshall begs Jean Paul to let them leave Maljardin. He tells her it is impossible. Mrs. Marshall tells him that Holly seems possessed and that she is afraid for her. Jean Paul dismisses this. Mrs. Marshall tells jean Paul that if he really cares for Holly he will at least let her go. Jean Paul confesses he cares for Holly, but tells Mrs. Marshall that Erica does so, too.
In the lab, Alison asks Raxl if she thinks Erica was lying about the Reverend’s death. Raxl tells her that she is not allowed to speak to the guests about Erica. Alison asks if the Reverend would have jumped and Raxl says no, but does not confirm that Erica killed him, Alison tells Raxl that the Reverend though that Erica was evil and was going to exorcise her. Raxl admits that she knew that. Alison thinks that the Reverend confronted Erica and she pushed him to his death. Raxl cannot answer. Alison now suspects that Erica suffered chemical changes that drove her mad. Raxl says she is doing all she can but she must depend on her gods and ancestors. If they will not act, she fears for everyone on the island.
Upstairs, Tim is sketching Erica. She stops him for the day and Tim still cannot get a good sketch. Jean Paul enters and wants to see the latest sketch but Tim does not want to show him. Jean Paul angrily tells Tim that he was paid to paint Erica and he must do it. Tim agrees that he will, but not today. Tim says every time he sketches Erica he sees her face as it must have looked right before the Reverend died. Erica slaps Tim and Jean Paul demands an apology. Tim tells Jean Paul that Erica should apologize to him. Erica apologizes, declaring that Tim didn’t know what he was saying. Tim agrees, reluctantly. He demands that jean Paul let him off the island so that he can keep his sanity. Erica tells jean Paul that he should let Tim go ashore, but Tim asks that Holly accompany him. Erica tells Tim that she did not hear that part. Jean Paul tells Tim that he can go – the portrait does not matter. Tim again demands that Holly go with him, but Erica warns him to accept what has been offered. She tells him that Holly will stay, and that if he decides to stay they should start again on the portrait tomorrow. She advises Tim that if he cannot portray her as she is now, then she cannot be responsible for the consequences.
Jean Paul asks Raxl what the guests are thinking. Raxl tell him that it is no secret what they think, but that she does not speak of Erica. Jean Paul wants Erica to be loved and asks if the guests love her. Raxl tells him that Alison does but the others do not. She pleads for permission to use her powers again to protect everyone. Jean Paul tells Raxl that he does not trust her, but Raxl tells him that she has proven her devotion to the Desmonds. Jean Paul gives Raxl permission to petition her gods, but warns her to leave Erica alone.
Later, Jean Paul speaks to Jacques, telling him that their bargain was supposed to mean happiness. He challenges Jacques to stop what he is doing, but asks him not to destroy Erica in his eyes. Jacques simply laughs in reply. In the crypt, Quito opens Erica’s casket to put the Reverend in it. Raxl tells Quito that they must think of Holly now, and lets him know that she has been given permission to consult with the gods.
The next morning, Holly descends the stairs in a very good mood. She tells Jean Paul that she and Erica have the day planned. They are going to have a picnic on the cliffs. Jean Paul is pleased that Holly likes Erica but wonders if a picnic on the cliffs is a good idea. He tells Holly that doing that so soon after the Reverend’s death not a good time. Holly tells him it was Erica’s idea for the picnic, which disturbs Jean Paul. Holly tells jean Paul Erica is so brave the way she is holding up. She asks if Jean Paul loves Erica and Jean Paul says he does. She tells Jean Paul that Erica gets upset with her if she doesn’t do what she asks, so she asks Jean Paul to tell her the picnic is cancelled. Holly says she will do anything Erica asks, even die for her. jean Paul is greatly disturbed by this.
In the crypt, Raxl and Quito go to the temple to ask the spirits to combat the evil present on Maljardin. However, when they get to the temple they find it destroyed, desecrated. The symbol of the great serpent is gone. Raxl laments that they all will be destroyed. Upstairs, in her room, Erica is holding the symbol of the serpent and wonders what has happened to Raxl’s powers as she laughs and snaps it in two.
