Voiceover: Erica – “Deep below the great hall of the mansion of Maljardin, the temple of the serpents has been destroyed by a mysterious force whose evil has permeated the lives of all within and whose power is directed toward the destruction of all those who oppose it.”
Jean Paul descends the stairs and Raxl is waiting for him. He asks her what she wants, and she wonders aloud who the real master of Maljardin is. Jean Paul replies that he is, but Raxl tells him that it is not a question of loyalty, but one of power, and she wonders who is in command. She insists that Jean Paul is commanded by Erica, but he will hear none of her arguments. Raxl questions if Erica is really the wife Jean Paul knew, and insists that the woman who has come back is not the same. She asks Jean Paul if he notices any difference. He tells Raxl he does not and demands that she not speak of it. He declares that he will not be influences by any superstitions or spells. Raxl tells him that she will be not conjuring any spirits as the temple has been destroyed. She is now helpless and cannot protect anyone.
Jean Paul insists they need no protection – Erica's return has banished the curse of Maljardin. Raxl asks him why so many people have died. She shows Jean Paul the sketch of Erica that Tim made before coming to Maljardin and asks if this new Erica is the same person. Jean Paul insists that Erica did not die – she was simply in a trance or under a spell that has now been broken. Raxl tells Jean Paul that Erica was definitely dead and wonders why she came back. She shows Jean Paul a recent sketch by Tim and asks him if it is the same Erica. Jean Paul tells her that it is only a sketch and insists that, despite Raxl’s attempts to make him doubt, he is in control. Raxl tells him that that is what she wanted to know. As she leaves, jean Paul compares the two sketches.
Upstairs, Erica is sitting for her portrait. Tim has managed to actually partially complete a painting, but agrees that they should stop as it is not correct. Erica asks Tim if she can see the painting, but Tim does not want her to. Jean Paul enters and asks to see the painting as well. As Jean Paul enters, Erica changes her mind and no longer wants to see the painting and tries to dissuade Jean Paul from looking at it. Sensing Erica’s reluctance, Tim now wants to sow the painting to Jean Paul. Erica does not want this, but Jean Paul uncovers the portrait anyway. He is enraged by what he sees, and asks Tim if this is what he thinks of Erica. Tim tells Jean Paul he was unable to control his hands while painting. Erica tells Jean Paul the portrait can be fixed, but Tim says that he will not change it. Jean Paul declares that he was wrong to let an unknown painter try to paint Erica, and tells Tim he can leave the island immediately. Erica tells Jean Paul that o one must leave Maljardin. Jacques speaks to Erica and reiterates that no one must leave the island. If anyone does, Erica must return to the land of the dead. Erica repeats that no one must go.
However, Jean Paul insists Tim should go, and Tim agrees that he wants to. Erica appeals to Jean Paul, saying that he pledged to protect her. Jean Paul is adamant that Tim should go, saying that only those who love Erica should remain. As Tim leaves the room, Erica tells Jean Paul that it is of the utmost importance that Tim not leave. Jean Paul asks why and Erica says it is because Tim might talk about events on the island. Jean Paul dismisses this, telling Erica that no one will believe Tim when they see her alive. Erica begs Jean Paul not to let Tim leave, but Jean Paul tells her she needs to let him be the master.
As Jean Paul leaves the room, Erica moves to slash the portrait, but is interrupted by Raxl. Raxl asks Erica if she will slash this portrait like she slashed the last one. Erica tells Raxl that it is clear to her now – it was Raxl’s idea to get Jean Paul to have Tim leave. Erica says that she thought Raxl had learned her lesson yesterday and Raxl realizes that it was Erica who destroyed the temple. Erica boldly tells Raxl she is now powerless. Raxl says that Erica is here to destroy, but Erica counters that she is here to stay in this life and will allow no one to stop her.
Later, Tim enters Holly’s room and tells her he got fired and invited to leave. Tim asks Holly to go with him, but Holly tells him that she likes it there. She says Erica is kind to her. Tim asks Holly if the island gives her the creeps. Holly just repeats that she likes Erica, but Tim wonders if she is just saying that to upset her mother. He tells Holly that he has fallen in love with her, but Holly is skeptical, telling Tim that he hardly knows her. She says that she doesn’t even think she knows what love is yet. Tim asks Holly if she cares for him at all and Holly tells him she is not sure. Tim asks again if Holly will come with him and she tells him she needs to think about it. She says she feels safe on the island and that she is scared to go back into the world again, and asks Tim for a little time to think.
Downstairs, Erica begs the portrait of Jacques for help to prevent Tim from leaving. Jacques tells her that she needs to possess Holly before Tim leaves. It is Holly’s essence that will cement her reincarnation. Jacques warns Erica that is anyone leaves before she is able to possess Holly that she will have failed and will be summoned back from whence she came. He advises her to play for time. At that moment, Tim descends the stairs, looking for Quito. Erica tells him Quito is on an errand. She tells Tim that she is sorry that he can’t count her portrait amongst his triumphs. She insists that the portrait was not a total disaster, but Jean Paul is too proud to admit it. Erica then asks Tim to stay and forget about the portrait. Tim tells her that Jean Paul will object as he knows what he as seen in Erica. Tim excuses himself and heads to pack. As he leaves, Erica asks him what Holly has decided about leaving. Tim tells her that Holly is thinking about it. Erica asks Tim if he will stay for dinner. Then, after Holly decides, they both can leave if they wish. Tim agrees to stay. As Tim goes upstairs, Erica begs Jacques for help. Jacques’ ring appears on her finger and she thanks him.
Upstairs, Jean Paul enters Holly’s room. He tells her that he has a feeling that she is not OK. Holly tells him that she is upset that Tim is leaving, and asks Jean Paul why he is letting Tim go. Jean Paul tells her that he cannot keep anyone, not even for Erica. Holly tells Jean Paul that she feels as though he has been protecting her. Jean Paul asks Holly is she really wants to stay and Holly says she does, as long as he will let her. Erica enters. Jean Paul tells Erica Holly will be staying and Erica is happy.
In Erica’s room, Tim is packing up his things when Raxl enters. She asks him to see the portrait and Tim shows it to her. Raxl comments that Tim has seen what she has seen and it’s good that he is leaving now. Tim tells Raxl that he will be staying until after dinner and Raxl begs him to leave immediately. Tim says that if he can persuade Holly to come with him the waiting will be worth it. Raxl asks if the waiting will be worth his life.
Alone with the portrait, Erica again asks for help. She tells Jacques that Tim is still leaving as he knows who she really is. Jacques tells her that Tim must be stopped, but Erica tells him that Tim is determined to leave that night. Jacques tells Erica that he must move out of his time to help her, and tells her to summon Jean Paul. Concentrating, they both summon Jean Paul together.
