Maljardin Arc
EPISODE 18

Holly awakens on the couch to find Jean Paul looking down on her. She says she was confused and thought she was at home waiting for her father. Jean Paul calms her and makes her a cup of coffee.

Dan Forrest meets Vangie in the French Leave Café, expressing his frustration that no one will take him to Maljardin. Vangie tells him that only Jean Paul and Quito are able to traverse the channel, saying that the channel is very treacherous and is not charted. She also tells him that the legend of Maljardin being the “Garden of Evil” goes back over 300 years and that its reputation for evil and death is continuously updated, implying that her father’s recent death is somehow due to the influence of Maljardin.

Jean Paul tells Holly he has to go to the mainland for flowers and asks Holly to attend Erica’s funeral service. She refuses as she does not want to see the Reverend Dawson. She asks Jean Paul is his mind will be eased by having the services and he tells it will be. Holly confesses to Jean Paul that she likes the idea of brining Erica back from the dead. At that moment, lightning strikes and Holly leaves the room. After she is gone, Jacques speaks to Jean Paul from the painting, telling him it was he who caused the lightning to get rid of Holly. He tells Jean Paul to bring Dan Forrest to the island so that he can keep an eye on him and make sure he is not working against him.

Vangie tells Dan that Erica is dead, based on the signs that she has seen. Dan doesn’t agree, and Vangie asks him why Holly, her mother, the Reverend and everyone else are all on the island at this time, why Dan was fired, etc. She tells him that if he finds the answer to one of the questions, he’ll find the answer to all of them. Dan wonders why Jean Paul never told him of Erica’s death, and Vangie tells him that it was not Jean Paul, but Jacques DesMondes that has caused these things to happen. She believes that Jacques is trying to possess Jean Paul. Dan insists he’ll get to the island and find out the answers he needs.

On Maljardin, Tim paints Erica’s portrait, using Holly as the model. The Reverend Dawson interrupts and Holly tells him to go away. Dawson announces he will do the ceremony for Erica. Tim points out that he feels odd painting a dead woman, but agrees that both Erica and Holly are quite beautiful, and asks the Reverend his thoughts. He is noncommittal, but agrees it is odd to be painting a dead woman, and also strange that he is going to conduct a memorial service for Erica while Jean Paul is still proclaiming that she will soon live again. Dawson questions how sane Jean Paul really is.

At the Café, Jacques possesses Jean Paul as he greets Dan.  Jean Paul apologizes to Dan and shakes his hand, exposing the ring.  Dan asks Jean Paul if Erica is dead and why he didn’t tell him.  Jean Paul says he couldn’t take it in.  His sorrow is a facade.  Dan says no one knows the future except for Vangie and tells Jean Paul that Vangie thinks something odd is happening on Maljardin.  Jean Paul/Jacques invites Dan to come along to the island and tells Dan to meet him at the dock.

Vangie has been listening and knows the story.  She says she ought to call the papers.  Jean Paul says she will not do it.  Vangie says she is the Conjure Woman and she’s after the devil to which Jean Paul replies that he is after her.
