Jean Paul enters to see the Reverend staring at the portrait. The Reverend comments that everyone seems mesmerized by Jacques and the evil he is supposedly spreading, he tells Jean Paul that he attributes all happenings to a live human being.
Raxl tells Jean Paul that it is foretold that the conjure woman will find death on Maljardin. Jean Paul tells Vangie she doesn’t have to do it, but Vangie says she will – for his sake. Raxl reiterates that the spirits told Vangie not to have the séance, yet Jean Paul dismisses this.
Jean Paul accuses the Reverend of possibly wanting to disrupt the séance, but says he will allow him to participate because Jean Paul wants to prove he is stronger. Jean Paul asks the Reverend if he is prepared to face the dead. He asks Vangie who will be in the circle, telling her that he will choose the séance participants, but Vangie says he cannot. It is not up to her to choose either, but tells Jean Paul that they will be chosen now. She warns everyone not to touch anything.
Alison interrupts, saying she wants to volunteer for the séance. Raxl asks her if she found the cyanide or Menkin’s notes, and Alison wonders how Raxl knew of the missing notes, saying that when she talked of them Raxl was nowhere around. Raxl does not answer, instead accusing Alison of trying to hide Menkin’s notes. The Reverend says he’s accused of pushing Holly, Dan is accused of tampering with the capsule, Mrs. Marshall is accused of wanting to kill holly, and now Alison is accused…he wonders what new accusations they will hear.
In the crypt, Raxl tells Erica that the spirits will tell them who is to be in the circle. Raxl wonders if Erica knows the secret that will defeat Jacques. Vangie tells Raxl that they may all find out tonight. They head into the temple.
Upstairs, Jean Paul talks to the portrait of Jacques, telling him that he is in control of his own mind and body. He dares Jacques to talk to him, but the portrait remains silent. The Reverend moves to go down to the crypt, but Jean Paul forbids it. The Reverend is upset at Jean Paul’s behavior, telling him that they never know what Jean Paul will do, say or think. He claims they are prisoners, being turned against each other. Jean Paul asks The Reverend if he fears his own judgment day…
In the temple, Raxl asks to hear what they should know and asks for strength to conduct the séance. The voices tell her that Holly must not attend the séance. Raxl sees Dan called to death – he may not attend either. Quito is needed at the séance because of his loyalty. Raxl asks about Jean Paul and hears nothing, yet Vangie collapses.
Upstairs, the reverend is still scolding Jean Paul. He warns him that he can do what he likes but he too will be judged. In the temple, Raxl wonders what happened. She is concerned that Vangie is dead and that her prediction of her death on Maljardin has been fulfilled.
Back upstairs, the Reverend wonders why only Jean Paul’s feelings should be considered…he is not unique. Jean Paul wants to know how he will be judged, and the Reverend replies by the consequences of his actions. Jean Paul says they are no concern of his. The Reverend is very upset over all the danger to which they have been subjected. He claims the real Jean Paul is a person who ignores the suffering of others, making them suffer for the sake of a lost cause. He accuses Jean Paul of having love for no one but himself. Jean Paul says he didn’t bring the Reverend to the island. He again accuses the Reverend of pushing Holly down the stairs and tells him to become a man.
Quito and Raxl appear with a weak Vangie. Seeing the state Vangie is in, the Reverend accuses Jean Paul of having her soul on his hands as well. Vangie is placed on the couch and is tended to by Alison. Alison says she will be alright. Jean Paul speaks to her, telling her that he needs her. Raxl begs Jean Paul not to make his friend suffer. Jean Paul appears confused. At that moment, Vangie opens her eyes, looks at Jean Paul and says “I saw death” – Jean Paul asks Raxl to tell Vangie all will be fine, and then calls off the séance. Vangie explains that the death she saw was not her own, but a figure, an unclear figure – a man. Then she looks at the painting and says it was Jacques. Alison says that the séance cannot go on as it’s too dangerous to Vangie.
Jean Paul asks Vangie if the figure she saw means death. She tells him that it does, but not death to her. Raxl suggests it might be death for Jean Paul. Contrary to what he declared earlier, Jean Paul now says there will be a séance, as he must contact Erica.
