Quito enters the main hall with a barrel that he takes down to the crypt. The Reverend watches this and checks the floor afterward, finding sand on it. He wonders what’s going on in the crypt.

Raxl takes Vangie upstairs to eat, and reminds Quito to guard the crypt with the penalty of death to anyone who touches anything. The Reverend observes all of this, and then speaks to the portrait of Jacques, wondering if all the recent talk of possession is true.

Raxl informs Vangie that Jean Paul has ordered another séance. The Reverend overhears this and wonders why. Raxl insists that the séance must go forward. The Reverend says it was only through God’s blessing that they were saved from any danger during the first séance. Raxl tells the Reverend that the chandelier fell through the work of the devil. The Reverend tells Raxl that he overheard Vangie and Jean Paul talking about Jacques being the disruptive influence. Vangie says she was in a trance and does not remember.

The Reverend urges Vangie not to perform another séance lest the prophecy of her death come true. Vangie tells him that her death is a certainty – no one can stop it. The Reverend talks to Holly and urges her to leave the island, telling her that Tim and Dan are planning to leave. Holly is confused, saying that Jean Paul allowed them to leave, but the Reverend tells her that he changed his mind.

In the dining room, Raxl wonders what they can do to protect Erica and Jean Paul from danger, but Vangie reminds her the only way is to find the doll and pin. The Reverend says that they need to start trusting one another and stick together. Holly confesses that it’s hard to do. The Reverend hopes Holly will not be set up to be hurt again.

Vangie suggests that it not just an evil spirit bringing harm and potential death – someone else is working with it. The Reverend wonders if Raxl works for Jean Paul or if someone works with her to cause the problems they have been having. He insists that someone real is causing this, not a devil. The Reverend and Holly attempt to get Vangie not to do the séance and allow whomever it is to harm anyone again. However, they do not get anywhere and leave in frustration.

Once they leave, Raxl urges Vangie to do the séance, but Vangie suspects that the devil might be working through everyone on the island. Vangie says there might be another way to banish the devil. She and Raxl descend to the crypt. Raxl instructs Quito to keep everyone out, even Jean Paul, while she and Vangie examine the fresh sand Quito has brought in. Upstairs, the Reverend believes that if they could get everyone to stop thinking a devil is at work, the danger would go away.

Raxl tells Vangie of the symbols that appeared in the sand during the séance. Vangie asks if she remembers the symbols, and Raxl tries to write them. As she does so, Vangie realizes they symbolize the conjure doll and pin.

Vangie asks Raxl why she didn’t preserve the symbols, but Raxl insists she did. They realize Jean Paul was near the box and Vangie suspects he might have destroyed the symbols while under some form of possession. Raxl attempts to draw the symbols but cannot remember clearly. She draws a symbol representing a vessel of the sea; a ship that destroys…Raxl says that it is the pirate vessel of Jacques when he took the island years ago.

Vangie draws a symbol and says that if this symbol was present during the first séance they can perform another séance in safety. Raxl tells her that it was the symbol she saw, but Vangie is not sure she is telling the truth or if a devil is telling her to say that. Thinking about the symbol that Raxl drew, Vangie and Raxl come to the conclusion that the vessel is the supply boat so they go to search it again.

Meanwhile, Holly tells the Reverend she imagined a secret door in the crypt. The Reverend accidentally reveals to her that there is a door, but says even if Holly could find it she wouldn’t be able to get anywhere. Holly heads down to the crypt. Quito is worried she is down there, but Holly begs him to help her. Quito is torn between his fondness for Holly and his duty to Jean Paul.

Outside, Raxl realizes that the supply boat has been searched many times, and laments that she cannot remember the specific symbol she saw. She accuses the Reverend and his disbelief of being a disruptive influence. They all head back inside, despondent.
