In the main hall, Vangie explains to the Reverend that Raxl cannot remember the symbol and mentions that the Reverend’s disbelief might be the problem. She tells the Reverend that he was selected to be at the séance, but he is still a disruptive force. He is simply less evil than the others.
Tim comes down and looks for Holly. The Reverend tells him she is looking for a secret tunnel in the crypt. He worries that if Jean Paul finds her he will does something rash.
In the secret room, Jean Paul records a message to Erica. He tells her he will continue to try to contact her through a séance. He wonders if Jacques kept them from contact, and now suspects someone else is helping Jacques. As he wonders, he notices Holly in the crypt. He stops the recording and heads there.
In the crypt, Holly is pleading with Quito for help, but Quito wants her to leave. The Reverend and Tim head to the crypt, but Jean Paul stops them, telling them the crypt is off limits. He warns them of dire consequences if they attempt to go down there. Downstairs, Holly asks Quito if he knows who tried to kill her, Quito does not know. She continues to ask for help, but Quito keeps trying to get her to leave.
Jean Paul loudly orders everyone to the great hall, even calling down the stairs for Holly. She is afraid to go upstairs. Jean Paul asks the Reverend is he has something to say. The Reverend accuses Jean Paul of abandoning his responsibility as master of Maljardin. He says that Jean Paul’s control on the island began to disintegrate after Menkin’s death, and mentions all the strange things happening that Jean Paul can’t control, then wonders if Jean Paul can actually control them. Jean Paul reiterates that no one is to interfere with Erica. The Reverend accuses Jean Paul of being driven beyond the bounds of reason. He says it’s Jean Paul’s drive that pushes them all, perhaps even to violence.
Downstairs, Holly has heard everything and is frightened. She finally realizes that Jean Paul is like two different men, and worries he might kill someone someday.
Alison says that she has no time to listen to Jean Paul’s or the Reverend’s opinions and attempts to return to the lab. Jean Paul insists that she stay, but she ignores him, calling him a fool as she storms out. Jean Paul says she will regret that.
Jean Paul beings up the damaged cryonics instruments that Dan found, wondering where Dan is now. The Reverend says that the damage to the cryonics was an accident, but Vangie interjects, saying that if the devil controls someone some things are not accidental. She agrees that the capsule could be damaged if evil is free to roam.
Jean Paul asks the Reverend if he is evil. The Reverend responds that he is only trying to restore logic to the situation. Jean Paul says that both he and Vangie fought an evil influence during the séance. His does not believe it was Vangie, Alison, Quito or himself, so it could only be one person – the Reverend.
Jean Paul asks Vangie if the Reverend caused the séance to fail because the devil used him. Vangie cannot say that. She says that since the Reverend disbelieved he weakened the chain, but anyone can be the tool of the devil. Jean Paul again insists no one is allowed in the crypt and says he must now impress it upon Holly, telling everyone that they will see what happens when someone disturbs Erica. The Reverend asks Jean Paul to leave Holly alone, and Jean Paul asks Mrs. Marshall’s opinion. She says he is right to be angry, that she can’t forgive her, but hopefully he can. Jean Paul says nothing and heads to the crypt.
In the crypt, Jean Paul asks Quito if Holly touched anything. He indicates that she did not. Jean Paul then asks why Holly was down there. Holly tells Jean Paul she was looking for a way out. Jean Paul tells Holly says he will have to make an example of her. Holly is frightened and repeats that she was looking for a secret door. She tells Jean Paul that it was he who brought her down the last time, asking her to help him find the secret door. Jean Paul is confused at this.
Upstairs, Alison asks everyone who put Menkin’s missing notes in the lab. No one knows, so she goes to find Jean Paul. She shows the notes to Jean Paul, saying that they cover at least one of the missing six weeks. Alison asks Jean Paul where he found the notes, but he says he the wrong one to ask. However, he knows who will answer.
