EPISODE 41

Dan returns to the mansion after looking for a way out and learns that Holly is down in the crypt. He goes to help, but Vangie tells him Dr. Carr is down there. Dan decides to go anyway, and meets Jean Paul on the way down. Jean Paul asks Dan if he’s been on a journey.

Holly and Alison come back up from the crypt. Alison tries to reassure Holly, telling her she was not in danger, but Holly is convinced that only Alison’s showing Jean Paul Menkin’s notes saved her.

At that moment, Jacques speaks to Jean Paul, telling him that the things he does when he possesses Jean Paul’s body are things that Jean Paul will not remember, emphasizing to Jean Paul that he is in control of him. Jacques then warns Jean Paul to be discrete, for if he appears mad, people will betray him and leave Erica vulnerable.

After hearing Jacques’ warning, Jean Paul announces that he will do no more about this for now, but warns that no one else is ever to enter the crypt unless he authorizes it. Mrs. Marshall tries to talk to him, but he rebuffs her and heads back down to the crypt.

After he leaves, Alison tells Dan that Jean Paul was all excited over the notes. While everyone discusses the notes, Vangie reads the tarot in the dining room; she draws a card and crumples it in her hand. Alison notices and asks Vangie if she is OK. Vangie tells Alison she is fine, having no memory of crushing the tarot card. However, Vangie admits that she is worried that evil forces are gathering to wage a war though everyone.

Upstairs, Holly is in her room when Alison enters and tells her that she has something very important to ask her about Jean Paul. She asks if Jean Paul was going to harm her when she came down into the crypt, and shows Holly the missing notes. Alison explains to Holly that they were for recreating the human body - not for Erica, but a breakthrough none the less. Alison tells Holly that she thinks Jean Paul has the missing notes, but he says he does not remember. Holly tells Alison that Jean Paul also didn’t remember about asking her to find the secret door in the crypt.

Upstairs, Dan, Tim and the Reverend discuss the navigation of the channel. Tim thinks that the secret to navigating it is not written down, but Dan says he noticed what looked like charts in Jean Paul’s room. The Reverend says they could be phony. At that moment, Jean Paul enters and subtly warns Dan about having thoughts of leaving.

Jean Paul asks Vangie if she is ready to do a séance. She says she is strong enough, so Jean Paul suggests the next day. Vangie warns that Jean Paul will fight the spirits alone as she can only bring them through. Jean Paul understands, vowing that there will be another séance.

Mrs. Marshall Vangie if she really can interpret the tarot cards, and mentions that she feels she has a rapport with Vangie that might be useful at the séance. Vangie says the spirits will decide that. The Reverend tells Vangie he senses she does not want to go through with the séance. Vangie tells him that she has a responsibility to carry on the work of the conjure man. The Reverend tells her that she can set it aside, but she says she cannot, telling him that it goes beyond Jean Paul's or her choice. The Reverend says he will refuse to participate in another séance. However, Vangie draws the fool from the tarot deck and insists that the Reverend will participate – he has no choice.

Meanwhile, Alison asks Holly about what she thought in the crypt when she was being confronted by Jean Paul. Holy says that she felt Jean Paul was angry. Alison tells Holly that Jean Paul initially looked as though he’d do Holly harm, but when she got down there he seemed to have forgotten that. She wonders why. Holly says that Jean Paul actually took her down there the first time, to look for the secret door, and then didn’t remember having done that.

Upstairs, reading the tarot, Vangie again has some kind of attack, crushing another tarot card. Alison asks her what is wrong. Seemingly in a trace, Vangie tells Alison that warring spirits are gathering. Then she comes out of her trance, appearing shaken.

Later, Alison descends into the crypt. Jean Paul demands to know why she is there, and she reminds him that Erica was her sister. He relents, but tells Alison that he likes to be there alone. Alison tells Jean Paul about how he forgot that he brought Holly down to the crypt to look for the secret door, and also mentions that he was the only one in the lab when the records were found. She asks how Jean Paul could forget these things. Jean Paul does not answer, but instead says that he will get the rest of the records if he has to drag them out of the devil’s hands.
